The Importance of a Literary Education

The November issue of First Things has a must read article about the intellectual peril our society finds itself in. If you needed evidence of the value of an education like RiverTree's, full of ideas and filled with literature, please check it out. Also consider the book the author draws from: The dumbest generation: How the digital age stupefies young americans and jeopardizes our future. I have not read it yet, so this is not a recommendation. However, my copy is in the mail and I will be sure to let you know.

I finally read this article, and it is powerful. (Funny that this is all conveyed in a blog.) This lent I've given up reading other blogs, web newsletters, and the infamous Facebook (with a few exceptions for replying to others messages). I don't miss it. I've read more books, knitted more, cleaned more, and done more art projects with the kids. Our giving up tv almost 5 years ago has been terrific, an while I can't give up the computer, my life and the life of my mind is improved by strict guidelines and restrictions on the new "idiot machine".
